SAP GRC MSMP is a work flow configuration which can let you company customize your workflow based on your requirement. The workflow has different stages and requests has to pass through various stages to get approved. The approver in these stages are the agents. There are SAP provided agents which are pre delivered. These Pre delivered agents can be used if the workflow is simple and does not require complex approvals. But when you need approval based on request attributes then you have to use agents which can be created based on specific attributes. Some of the common attributes will be system Functional area business area, employee type and many more attributes

The SAP Predefined approvers like GRAC_MANAGER will use the user entered in the manager box for approval. This could lead to user getting approved by person who is not his or her supervisor. Instead of that you can use a BRF Plus agent rule and route the request to specific person then the end user cannot ask his buddy to approve the request.  The Predefined agent GRAC_ROLEOWNER and GRAC_SECURITY are safer as they go to predetermined owners.

The BRF Plus agent rule gives you the flexibility to route the request to specific owners in the system. This way you have predictable way of seeing who is going to approve the request. More over the approver can vary based on certain attributes. In the case of approvers based on User group / Role there is not much flexibility.
