Following are the core functions of the SAP Security administrator
Project Support: User Administration / Role Administration:
This involves creating the roles based on functional team specifications and creating the users based on approval. When creating roles some level of research on the functionality and possible restrictions on that transaction has to be understood.
Production Support:
In this phase the SAP System has gone live and the end users are using the system. Now the SAP Security administrator has to support the users who have access issues. This could be adding additional roles to the user or updating the exiting roles or creating brand new roles. There are other basis related issues from RFC Connections, printing, batch jobs, BAPI Calls, interfaces, and BDC Sessions. So it is good for the SAP Security person to have good understanding basis related activities so that they can look at appropriate logs to understand the trouble shoot the problem. For example SLG1 transaction can give information on all the transaction related logs or SM21 or ST22 on system related logs.
Audit Support:
This will be periodic occurrence that the internal or external auditors will look for information regarding the sensitive access, Segregation of duties access and critical system parameters. The SAP Security administrator is supposed to provide the information to the concerned authority.
